Note: Rupert Lee was one of the early pioneers of modern sculpture in England and worked alongside Frank Dobson in the sculpture department of the Westminster School of Art. In 1930 he arranged an ambitious exhibition of modern sculpture on the roof gardens of Selfridges - a show that included work by the young emerging sculptors like Moore, Hepworth and Maurice Lambert.
Note this early sculpture, from 1918, was made when Lee was recuperating from 'shell shock' at the Seale Hayne military hospital in Devon. Lee ran a sculpture studio there to help other patients recuperating from the trauma of the Trenches.
