Note: Barrett's extraordinary draughtsmanship was recognised early, earning him admission to the Central School of Art and Designin London at just 15 years old. He studied there from 1936 to 1940 and was taught wood engraving by John Farleigh. Barrett developed a reputation for his deeply symbolic paintings, wood engravings, and distinct artistic philosophy. Born in Colchester, Essex, he spent much of his life crafting an emotionally resonant, often melancholic body of work that explored the complexities of the human condition.
