Note: Fry first met Vanessa Bell in 1910 around the time of the First Post Impressionist exhibition. They began an intimate relationship in 1911 which proved shortlved, but their artistic friendship remained strong until Fry's death in 1934. This sensitive portrait evokes the depth of feeling Fry had for the sitter.
The drawing was made on high quality Michallet laid paper prized by some of the great 19th Century French artists like Georges Seurat and Edgar Degas.
