Provenance
The Artist's Family; by descent
Note: The present painting was exhibited in Fry's celebrated solo exhibition at The Independent Gallery at 7a Grafton Street in London in 1920. The exhibition received positive reviews and The Burlington Magazine acknowledged the artist's debt to Cezanne and also asserted: 'It is possible to criticize Mr. Fry's aims and methods, but there can be no two opinions as to the intelligence and vigour of his work. Even his failures are better worth seeing than most people's successes. As his his reputation in other directions would suggest, he is one of the most learned and intellectual of modern English painters.'
