Note: Merchant was deeply influenced by Barbara Hepworth's iconic pierced oval froms which derived from landscape and her pursuit of spiritual abstraction. Hepworth and Merchant shared a profound interest in spirituality, religion, and mysticism. While she pioneered the "pierced form" in 1932, her move to St Ives, Cornwall, deeply solidified her fascination with combining the human form, nature, and the concept of negative space.
