Provenance

Dr. Edouard Troester

The present drawing is recorded under No. Y 40 in the Matisse Archives.

Note: This important drawing  by Matisse from his historic fauvist period was made when he worked in the small coastal town of Collioure in the summer of 1905 and 1906 and changed the course of modern painting. It was whilst there that he declared: 'Everything must be created anew: both object and colour.'

Literature

With a photo-certificate from Wanda de Guébriant
