Provenance

The Artist's Estate

Note: Rowland Hill (1919-2015) was a teacher in Exeter, artist and potter who trained at Wigan School of Art from 1937 to 1940. During the 1930s he was influenced by 'machine age' cubism. After The War, Hill completed his studies at the University of Liverpool. He showed his work at various exhibitions including a Spring Exhibition at Manchester Ballet Club where he hung alongside LS Lowry and Theodore Major.

Hill was also a member of the Manchester Arts Club. After moving to Devon, Hill became a member of the Kenn Group and The Association of Devon Art Societies.

In 1958, Hill was elected a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and his pottery and paintings were shown in their annual exhibitions for many years, along with David Leach, John Maltby and others. Hill was also a founder member of the Arts in Schools Association and, in addition to teaching art and pottery, was a part-time teacher at Exeter College of Art.
