MAURICE DENIS (1870-1943)
Maternité à la fenêtre ouverte , 1926
Signed in pencil
10.75 x 7.75 inches
Note: Maurice Denis (1870-1943) made a number of images on the theme of the mother and child, often showing his wife and children. This lithograph dates from 1926, and may show his second wife Elisabeth Graterolle whom he married in 1921 and had two children with. He had previously fathered seven children by his first wife, who had died in 1919. Denis greatly admired early Renaissance painting and this print recalls images of the Virgin and Child, such as those by Sandro Botticelli, that often show the Virgin set against an open window or large vista.
