This is one of two head studies of the distinguished author-philosopher Gerald Heard (1889-1971) executed by Philpot most likely in 1915. Born in London, Heard studied history and theology at Cambridge and wrote his first book in 1929. He emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1937 where he wrote and lectured with occasional radio and TV appearances. Heard founded the Trabuco College of prayer in the Santa Ana Mountains in 1942 (no known as The Ramakrishna Monastery) as a facility where comparative religious studies and practices could be pursued. Heard wrote his most important book of philosophy, The Five Ages of Man, in 1963.
