Walter Taylor
1860-1943
Taylor first trained as an architect, but he soon took up painting and studied under Fred Brown and then at the Royal College of Art. It was during his travels in France that he met Sickert, who subsequently introduced him to the Fitzroy Street circle. He was a founder member of the Camden Town Group and had his first solo exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in 1911. Taylor was primarily a painter in watercolours of landscapes, interiors and architectural subjects. He was also a key figure in the London Group, serving as Treasurer during the First World War and regularly serving on the Group's hanging committee. Taylor was also a member of Lucien Pissarro's Monarro Group, which was founded to further the tradition of the French Impressionists. An important collector and patron, he bought works by Sickert, Gilman and many other London Group members. The Leicester Galleries in London staged a memorial exhibition of his work in 1944.
