F. Ernest Jackson

1872-1945

Jackson studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts under Bouguereau, Constant, Ferrier and Laurens. He exhibited mainly at the RA from 1907 to 1945 (becoming an ARA in 1944), and at the NEAC, as well as London galleries and the provinces. In 1940 his portrait of Mrs Beasly, 1936-7, was purchased by the Chantrey Bequest. He taught at the Central School of Art, 1902-1921, the RA Schools, 1921-39, and was Principal of the Byam Shaw School, 1926-40. He designed for the London Underground and worked for the Ministry of Information 1914-18 and was co-founder of the Design and Industries Association in 1915. His qualities as a draughtsman were revered by such notable figures as Augustus John and Gerald Kelly. Peter Greenham has written of Jackson: 'When he drew for a student it was an unforgettable experience to share in the clarity with which he constructed the forms and controlled their relationship. His drawings set a standard both sensitive and exacting.'
