Hilda Carline

1889-1950

The daughter of the painter George F. Carline and the sister of Sydney and Richard Carline, she was trained at Tudor-Hart's school in Hampstead and in 1918 at the Slade School where she won prizes in painting. In 1919 she met Stanley Spencer whom she married in 1925. In 1937 they divorced and later her health deteriorated. She exhibited between 1920 and 1944 at the New English Art Club, at the Baillie and Goupil Galleries and between 1935 and 1944 at the Royal Academy. Her work is represented in collections including the Preston Art Gallery. Her earlier, painterly work was influenced by Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, using strong colour and simplified forms; later she was influenced by Stanley Spencer and her work became more poetic in mood. A major book about her work by Alison Thomas was published in 1999 by Lund Humphries.
